Essential Reading

HarperOne recently published a new book by Renovare’ titled, 25 Books Every Christian Should Read:  A Guide to the Essential Spiritual Classics.  The book was compiled by Renovare’ staff and a select Editorial Board that included Richard Foster, Dallas Willard, Phyllis Tickle, and Richard Rohr.  In the book, there is a brief historical introduction to each book, followed by a section on why they believe the book is important,  highlights of the themes of the book, and excerpts from the book itself.  It is a useful guide to some of the best Christian spiritual classics.

However, without revealing any of the choices in the book, I was wondering if we might start our own list?  I wonder what you might recommend if you were given the opportunity to be on a selection team?  Instead of 25, what might be your top 5 to 10 books that you believe would be great for every Christian to read?  What has been encouragement for you in your spiritual journey that you could recommend to others?

Given the VP3 audience, I know there are a number of ‘heavyweights’ out there who could give some great recommendations.  I invite you to join in the conversation.  Leave a post or find us on Facebook.  Maybe it will give you some good reading ideas and a list that you might share with your staff, congregation or small group.

  1. My list would have to start with Augustine’s Confessions, C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity, and if you can get your hands on a copy of it, Edna Hong’s The Gayety of Grace…

  2. For sure, my list would include:
The Rest of God, by Mark Buchanan
    Heaven, by Randy Alcorn, and
Becoming a True Spiritual Community, by Larry Crabb
