When Adults Gather …. Significant Things Happen (Part 2)

I uncovered in graduate school, and now practice almost every day, the deeply held belief that when adults gather together, “the answers are in the room.”

My favorite adult education professor would tell you “the answers are in the room” means that the rich experiences which shape the lives of adults gives us the capacity for outstanding problem solving and the ability to see into our settings and know far more than we initially deem possible.

At a recent VantagePoint3 Enriching Retreat in Green Lake, Wisconsin, I witnessed this depth when adults work together. More than 40 adults who care deeply about their churches and people, confirmed once again that “the answers are in the room” but much more than this.  They confirmed the evidence for the Spiritual Kingdom that is already alive in the hearts of believers.

Let me explain.

At the close of the second full day we were processing together what we were each seeing and learning.  I was leading the group through pretty complex layers of reflection on individual spiritual growth, care for others, and care for our church settings.  I asked everyone to simply write down on an index card what they were seeing and learning while the session was finishing up.  We wrote in silence. Our book has arrived!

Deep Mentoring: Guiding Others on Their Leadership Journey (InterVarsity Press, 2012) arrived in the mail last week. We wrote this book with the simple desire to help others come alongside others as a guide and friend, investing in their spiritual formation. For those familiar with the different VP3 processes many of the invitations in the book will be familiar, although expressed in new and different ways.

For those unfamiliar with VP3, Deep Mentoring provides a great introduction to what we care about and how we go about responding to these challenges of following Jesus in today’s world.

Eugene Peterson’s “Foreword” to the book has been a highlight for both Randy and me. Continue reading

Announcing the 2012 Enriching Retreat

We are a few months away from an annual highlight on our VP3 calendar The Enriching Retreat. We are gathering at a U.S. location this year,  Green Lake, Wisconsin (October 5-7, 2012) for a time of shared reflection and discussion, pause and prayer. Randy Reese and I will be inviting a conversation around the topic of “Guiding Others on Their Leadership Journey.”

For so many of us the Spirit is inviting us to pay attention, to move beyond the work of leading to the work of developing and guiding others as leaders. For others of us we are needing time to slow down and to reflect upon what the Lord is up to in our context and in our person. How can we help our communities pay attention and discover God’s good work with us and among us?

We are excited that this years conversation will flow out of our forthcoming book Deep Mentoring: Guiding Others on Their Leadership Journey (IVP, to be released October 2012). We hope you and folks from your community will consider joining us for this unique opportunity. All of this is offered in the beautiful autumn setting of the Green Lake Conference Center.  We are prayerfully looking forward to the conversation that develops at this year’s retreat. Click here for details…

A Gift

We recently had a VP3 staff team day, complete with Christmas party.  One of the things we did was share stories about the people we have encountered this past year through the ministry of VP3…people who have been gifts to us.  They have given to us the gift of knowing a little more of their story of change toward becoming the person God has intended them to be…a person with new hope to live more incarnationally…becoming a gift to others in Jesus’ name.

Sometimes we sit back in amazement at how the Lord has used what seems like our “two-fish-and-five-loaves” to help deepen and empower so many good people in various communities across North America. Continue reading

Giving Thanks

Thank you.

When you think about it, saying “Thank you,” is one of the first manners we encourage small children to adopt. This simple practice of remembering to thank the people around us is so basic to positive human interactions that, when absent, it is a glaring rudeness that paints the withholding party as arrogant. (Lisa Borden, Blogger @ The Conversant Life)

Far be it from us that we take this privileged position we have of serving you for granted.  Which is why, on the week of Thanksgiving here in the US, it seems appropriate for us to pause and say “Thanks.”  We are grateful for your participation and support of our work and we enjoy the ministry partnership we share with so many of you.  May you experience God’s abundance and grace where you live, work, serve and worship.   Continue reading

Banff – 2011

This past weekend we enjoyed the Enriching Retreat held in the beautiful  surroundings of Banff, Alberta.  The discussions were lively, the food fabulous, and the fellowship sweet as we focused on the ongoing need to develop our inner lives and to pay attention to the development of others.

It was a great weekend!

Leadership Retreat – Camp Geneva (Holland, MI)

This past weekend Rob and I gathered with a group of 25-30 leaders and pastors involved in the “Commissioned Pastor” process in the Great Lakes region of the Reformed Church in America.  Rob spoke on the theme of “Keeping Company with God and with Others.”  The time was filled with worship, spiritual exercises and rich conversations at the beautiful Geneva Shores Camp and Retreat Center on the shores of Lake Michigan in Holland, MI.

To all our new friends–we wish you well on your journey!

Making Introductions…Telling Stories

As a new Team member, I want to say, “Hello” to the VP3 community!  I recently came on full-time in the area of Advancement here at VantagePoint 3.  I have the joy of telling the story of what has been happening as churches, organizations and individuals have been using and going through the VP3 processes.  Did you know that nearly 7000 individuals have been through the Emerging Journey experience alone?   And as a result of God working through these experiences, there are hundreds of stories of life change, the development of new ministries, and the raising up of ‘harvest hands’ for kingdom work.

I have my own story of change and growth.  I got connected to VP3 as a church planter and pastor, looking for a way to spiritually nurture and empower my people in our ministry context.  I found the processes deeply encouraging to me personally, and life-changing for many who I had the privilege of leading.  As a result, many were encouraged, new leaders emerged, and new ministries developed.  It provided a wonderful context for God to do a good work. The gospel incarnated…

One of the joys of June is hosting the facilitator training retreats in various parts of the continent. A unique collection of pastors, church staff, and lay people gather in a peer learning environment in order to be prepared to facilitate an Emerging Journey or an Equipping Experience group in their local church context. In one form or another each of these men and women have been grabbed by the Apostle Paul’s deep concern–”but we must grow up…in every way into Christ” (Ephesians 4:14-16). They find themselves asking the question, how can we walk together with others in a way that will help them grow up in every way into Christ…?

Over the past couple facilitator training retreats in Calgary, AB (Centre Street Church) and in Dyer, IN (Faith Church) I have been reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words to the believers in Thessalonica, Continue reading
